Being People's Representatives is also about helping Economic Growth in own constituency
The example set by Sekinchan State Assemblyman Ng Suee Lim is commendable and deserves recognition.
To build on this success, I propose that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli, and Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing should engage with all Members of Parliament. Their task would be to encourage MPs to actively promote tourism within their constituencies.
Consider the economic benefits: tourism dollars can significantly boost the Gross Domestic Product. When local MPs excel in promoting tourism and supporting local businesses, they not only contribute to economic revival but also strengthen their political standing for future terms.
With Visit Selangor Year approaching in 2025, it is crucial for State Assemblymen to collaborate with local entrepreneurs to develop and highlight unique attractions. By doing so, they can attract tourists and enhance Malaysia's overall appeal.
Credit to Whom Credit is Due
While I may not have been particularly impressed when Ng became the state exco responsible for local councils, I have to acknowledge his role in transforming Sekinchan into what it is today.
I have previously written about the transformation I saw some six to seven years ago, and am eager to share my thoughts again, especially after spending two days in Sekinchan with a group of church friends. The weather was mostly favourable—slightly hot, but the drizzle didn’t dampen our spirits.
Our trip began with a visit to Bukit Melawati Fort in Kuala Selangor. While the historical aspects didn’t captivate everyone in our group, our guide, Kao Chee Ming, emphasized the importance of understanding the past.
Next, we went to the wishing tree at Pantai Redang in Sekinchan. It was charming to see how an old tree has been repurposed as a wishing tree, with people tossing their wishes high up, turning the tree a vibrant red. I also imagine the temple operators are benefiting financially from the sale of these ornamental wishes.
Pantai Redang is noticeably cleaner than it was during our last visit a few years ago. However, there’s still room for improvement, particularly regarding the cleanliness and organisation of the stall operators.
The efforts by Ng has also given opportunity to local entrepreneurs to introduce their own version of bicycles for rent. A one-kilometre ride on the Double Bench Classic Quadracycle for RM10 per pax was enough for the fun of it, passing by vast paddy fields of Sekinchan and the rice mill which has since turned into a tourist spot.
Visiting Ah Ma's house was always a delight, evoking a warm sense of nostalgia from days gone by.
There is also the Sekinchan Coconut farm where you get to enjoy local Malay delicacies and the fresh coconut shake to chill you down after a hot day.
Sky Mirror
The person who discovered Sky Mirror and transformed it into a tourist attraction is truly a genius. Their efforts are deserving of recognition for their significant contribution to the state.
On September 17, 2024, the second day of the public holiday, the number of visitors to Sky Mirror was astounding. Although the site itself consists merely of a muddy expanse of land elevated above the tides, the creative photography that it inspires makes the visit well worth it.
For food, there are several excellent seafood restaurants near the jetty, where you can take a motorboat ride to see the fireflies and visit the Sky Mirror.
