Unfortunately, when titles are misused, questionably obtained or retained despite serious wrongdoing, their credibility and prestige are diminished. I have encountered people who introduce themselves as “Datuk Seri Dr So-and-so”, although their doctoral qualifications cannot be verified. In one case, a deceased individual who used such a title could not be found through the membership search of the Majlis Datuk-Datuk when I checked.
