William Leong, a man of action

Bespectacled William Leong may be soft-spoken, but he is a man who solves problems for his constituents.
Ask Taman Daya residents. In 2008, when he first won the general election for the first time, I told him about the Taman Daya title issue. He immediately asked me to connect him with the residents.
That weekend, some 100 people from Taman Daya turned up at the meeting. Leong was probably surprised with the huge turnout at the makeshift meeting in Hulu Kepong.
I did not do anything except to pass the word to my primary schoolmate who told me that he and his residents had pursued the matter with former MCA member of parliament, Chan Kong Choy and his personal assistant, Wong Kung Fu.
Of course, I know both of them. I, too, was involved in trying to solve the title issue in my housing estate, and both Chan and Wong, together with then state exco, Tang See Hang, were anything but helpful.

I left it at that. About two years later, when I asked about the case, Leong invited me to attend a meeting at Selayang community hall.
It was a "working" meeting where Leong briefed the residents the nature of their problem, and what he had done to wind up the developer's company.
It became apparent to me that Leong meant business. He had done what needed to be done, to first wind up the developer's company and place it under a receivership. None of the MCA guy was willing to do this, but Leong did what was right to solve the problem.
Being a lawyer, he knew exactly what to do. I thought it was a very smart move. The discussion went on for at least two hours, with purchasers of the abandoned apartment given a few options of what could be done to solve their problem.
It became apparent to me that the Gombak Land Office could not carry out the subdivision of the master title of Taman Daya (including the landed property) until the abandoned apartment project was completed.
Perhaps a year later, once the abandoned project was revived, and completed, the Gombak Land Office was able to issue the individual titles to the property owners.
Bravo to YB William Leong! We need more Members of Parliament like Leong, unlike those who are aloof, hardly on the ground, yet claiming to be doing wonderful things for the constituents.
