As Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad prepare to announce their political futures on the very day of Anwar Ibrahim’s party convention, the optics of this timing cannot be ignored. I have a crucial piece of advice for these two leaders as well as many of their followers, as they navigate this pivotal moment.
It is easier for me as an outsider to see what these two young Turks fail to see. Rafizi may be assisted by people who know how to project him even through a piece of photograph — even using the background of a morning sun — that depicts him and Nik Nazmi as promising future leaders.
After reading and understanding some insights, hopefully, you will see through both Anwar and these two young Turks.
Let me begin with Rafizi when he first pulled out of politics. His announcement was that he would retire from politics forever. Obviously, he is inconsistent with his own words. When I tried to persuade him to return to politics, he projected himself as one who was deeply hurt by criticisms from the urban Chinese community whom he said weee criticising him mostly.
Although I knew straightaway here was a young man who could not see beyond things visible to his physical eyes, I still persuaded him, saying, “Rafizi, these are Cybertroopers in the modern-day version of the Boston tea party, with these cybertroopers using Chinese names. The way they wrote came across to me as non-Chinese. The communication via WhatsApp with Rafizi stopped there.
Years have passed by so quickly, and as I can see now from hindsight that Rafizi may be in need of help with certain disorders, I hope he takes my advice rather than go on a warpath with Anwar, whom by now, he should know better what Anwar is seeking to do for the nation. If Rafizi can prove Anwar or his family members are also on the take, by all means, he should provide the evidence, but I doubt so especially since this family has gone through thick and thin.
Understand the Man Himself
Rafizi may not see things as clearly as most of us would be able to do. I have often given the example of former IGP Rahim Noor, Syed Bulkhary Syed Mokhtar and Anwar’s main enemies from the past, Dr Mahathir Mohamed and Daim Zainuddin.
What became obvious to me was the fact that Rahim Noor was not being pursued after Anwar became Prime Minister; instead he visited the quarters of low-ranking officers often neglected by their superiors. When he was in detention, it was these junior officers who were kind to him.
He did not even pursue Mahathir until the latter threw a defamation lawsuit against Anwar. Clearly, it was only after that, that we see Anwar’s Lawan TETAP Lawan came into play. It is wrong to say that Anwar was using the Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to go after the two Tuns.
If I were Anwar, I would tell Azam Baki, “If you have the evidence, by all means, you have my blessings to go after them. In fact, quadruple your efforts as it is not easy to unravel the money trails.” After all, ordinary Malaysians have always wanted to see their money seized back what once belonged to them, and I am sure Azam Baki knew he had the blessings of Sultan Ibrahim the King himself. This is Anwar’s attempt for revenge but it is his obligation as a subject to the Agong to serve the people, to make sure every single Sen is taken back and put into good use for the sake of the ordinary citizens.
I would say Anwar is an amicable person until he is provoked to the extreme. Let mr illustrate: generally I am also very amiable as a child. Growing up as the only son in the family with quite a gap between my sisters and I, I preferred to play by myself or with the neighbours, which toll today we are good friends. After 40 plus years of not meeting each other, I am always the one who look forward to meet them for a session of touching base with each other again. With those in high positions, I am careful not to be misunderstood by others -- as sometimes, people do misunderstand my good intentions—as trying to hobnob around.
With two elder sisters, my relationship with my eldest sister was particularly thorny in our younger days where we would quarrel especially when I was being provoked time and again.
This, of course, carried on into my adulthood; although there were less taunting by my eldest sister anymore (she is more amicable these days, in fact, a very kind one, too). What I didn’t like as a child was when I was also blamed for starting the quarrel first; to me, it was injustice. I wished my mother would understand that I was just enjoying myself until I was provoked, And the next time i was provoked again, she would know who to rein back.
As an adult and now a senior citizen, all I want is to help this country come back together again, and to move on. I believe most people who know me cannot deny that I am mostly very amiable taking on my grandfather’s temperaments and principles in life. Even though he was educated and working as a chief clerk at Seremban Hospital, he did not mind mingling with fish mongers and others. My grandmother was, however, known as the tigress and a disciplinarian that you wouldn’t want to mess with as her kids or their spouses. Sometimes, when i switch to her mode, my campaign can last for years until justice is upheld for the bully victims.
I would often remain amiable until being frequently provoked or when I see some people being bullied. As someone who yearned for justice to prevail and the bullies to be restrained, when provoked, my natural response would be to fight until the bullies are restrained, and if found to be in the wrong, to bear the punishment himself.
I can compare myself as a tame dog wagging its tails when seeing even a stranger, but can be more aggressive and prolonged when being taunted again and again. I would not retaliate back in a quarrel but I will let the authorities handle the bullies. I hope by now, people like Rafizi and Albert Tei know what the future may hold for them.
I don’t believe Anwar is vindictive but if Rafizi keeps taunting him, don’t be surprised if the MACC and the Attorney-General have strong evidence to charge Rafizi, without Anwar even trying to help given that till now, I see he has a soft spot for Rafizi. A good example we can see today is both Tian Chua and even Azmin Ali appear to be enjoying their peace with Anwar.
I have in my writing also put together several blog posts which I asked friends to send to PMX, pointing some hangover baggages from his Umno days. I do it discreetly as someone supporting his premiership. So far, I have not heard from him either directly or through one of his speeches but one thing I can tell you is that, this man understands he too has his own weaknesses and if it is revealed to him with the good intentions in mind, he is more likely to accept. Plus I was selective with the people i knew are his loyalists whom I asked to forward him, even agreeing to them revealing my identity because I tell it from my heart.
