This is not a journey driven by ego, but a mission to make a difference. Just as salt was once used to preserve meat from rotting in the days before refrigerators were available, we, too, must work together to preserve the moral fabric of our society, with our army of 26 soldiers standing united in this mission. Having been invited to speak at a seminar, the author would be happy to deliver the same talk to journalism students or youth groups. He has also prepared a set of reflective questions to encourage readers to reflect on their own lives and apply some of the principles that have guided his personal journey. For years, Malaysian workers have waited for their basic salaries to catch up with the rising cost of living.  While some employers have taken the initiative to reward their employees fairly, others have been slow to act, leaving the Government to intervene. This raises an important question: should workers have to wait indefinitely for employers to recognise that their salaries are no longer sufficient to meet their basic needs? The proposed increase in basic salary to RM2,500 should not be viewed merely as another government policy that employers must comply with. It should be an opportunity to rethink how businesses value their employees and improve productivity. The Government cannot be expected to look into every aspect of every business. Its responsibility is to establish a fair framework, protect workers and create conditions for sustainable economic growth. There is a peculiar arrogance among Malaysians. We look at the Myanmar refugee, the Filipino domestic helper and the foreign construction worker and somehow convince ourselves that their misfortunes could never become ours. What makes us so certain that Malaysia cannot suffer the same fate? Perhaps we should study the histories of Myanmar and the Philippines before congratulating ourselves on how fortunate we are. Start speaking up for yourself instead of others doing it for you For too long, civic participation has felt like an exclusive club reserved for those with the time, patience, and writing skills to draft formal letters.  When we encounter unfair corporate practices, broken public amenities, or a frustrating bureaucracy, many of us prefer to suffer in silence rather than face a blank page. They rather complain than putting their complaint on some official platforms where it matters.  Meanwhile, local authorities exploit this passiveness, claiming they have received only one or two complaints regarding broken streetlights, uncollected rubbish, and other lingering issues. Ultimately, who is to blame except ourselves for failing to speak up? It is time to stop acting like a rocking chair—motioning endlessly in the same spot without ever moving forward.
