This is not foolproof but a simple way to fight scam
THIS may not be a foolproof method but at least it is a good way to safeguard your money: park your banking apps in another device which you keep at home.
Some things to note: This phone should be:
- Only dedicated to banking apps. No other apps to be downloaded on this phone.
- Turned off at all times.
- You don’t need another SIM card for your phone. Either use your home WiFi or your personal hotspot.
- If you are buying second handphone, make sure you do a factory reset.
- If you are buying a new handphone, make sure that you also do a factory reset before using the phone.
- You should also make sure you are using your own DATA or your HOME WIFI when logging to any bank app. Do not use Public Wifi to access your banking apps
- Instal an anti-malware software on your phone
Your other mobile phone which you carry with you everywhere you go should only have one banking app. Treat that app as your petty cash vault. Transfer a certain amount into this vault whenever you are short of cash.
The reason is simple: In case your phone is hacked, that is the only amount you will lose.
You can also use an old laptop or notepad as your dedicated device but make sure:
(a) they are able to access the bank websites to do your transaction. You only need to be able to transfer money to your personal handphone with the one bank app.
(b) the device is reformatted to factory settings
(c) no other apps such as WhatsApp or email account. Use only bank apps.
(d) it is always shutdown. When going on the internet, use only your home WiFi (not those available and shared with Tom, Dick and Hacker). If your WiFi at home is down, go to your phone to turn on hotspot.
(e) instal a good anti-malware and anti-virus software to safeguard your device.
The other suggestion given by a cousin of mine, Francis Soong who was a former senior police officer in Singapore is to download Scamshield on the mobile phone.
