In English and Bahasa Malaysia: PBT perlu tanam banyak pokok buah-buahan untuk dinikmati orang ramai

Ajar anak-anak buat Kacukan

Today, I had the pleasure of enjoying another sweet pink guava—hidden behind some leaves, but I had spotted it earlier. It tasted absolutely delightful! This took place during my morning walk at the recreational park within my housing estate. This was my suggestion to our landscape director, Tuan Mokhtar Affandi and I am grateful to him for taking up the idea. I am glad to hear that he is “currently working on preparing plots for a people’s orchard in an open area.” Read this as well.
Bravo, DBKL is, in fact, ahead of me 👍🏽👍🏽
While my idea of tree planting focuses on making fruits accessible to the general public, DBKL has already taken the initiative by planting fruit trees in public spaces, such as around Masjid India.
Teach students grafting methods
I hope DBKL will consider expanding this effort by planting more fruit trees—especially grafted varieties that produce abundant harvests.
During the gap between final exams and the school holidays, students often get bored or skip regular classes. This is the perfect opportunity for schools to organise trips to orchards. Perhaps DBKL or other local councils could offer grafting workshops—covering techniques like cleft grafting, whip-and-tongue grafting, and budding.
While students help produce grafted plants for DBKL, they also gain hands-on experience in grafting. I remember experimenting with grafting when I was around 10 or 11, inspired by what I read in textbooks. My mum wasn’t too thrilled when she saw soil wrapped around a branch with plastic—she thought I was damaging her plants. But for me, it was pure joy.
No More Doubts
Two or three weeks ago, I asked Microsoft Copilot and was informed that fruit trees are indeed planted along public roads in New Zealand for people to harvest. So there's no need to doubt the idea any longer.
Today, I searched for supporting news and found several links that can be shared with local council landscape directors.
My idea is clearly implementable. In fact, planting fruit trees does not attract birds—this only happens when the fruits are left unharvested and become overly ripe. This was the explanation I received from a farmer who cultivates land on a campus ground.
Just moments ago, Puteri Khairul Fathiah Fahimudin, Director of the Department of Landscape and Recreation at DBKL, shared an article and mentioned that several water apple trees at the Water Apple Park in front of the TH Selborne building on Jalan Tun Razak have already begun to bear fruit.
If hybrid fruit trees were planted along public walkways and the public were allowed to harvest them, it could encourage more people to walk. When a single type of fruit is planted in abundance, theft is unlikely. The Ministry of Agriculture could also assist local growers in finding markets in Singapore, where prices are higher—while Malaysians, visitors to the country, and even the urban poor could enjoy fresh fruits for free.
So my idea is indeed feasible. In fact, planting fruit trees does not typically attract birds—this only happens when the fruits are left unharvested and become overly ripe. This was the explanation I received from a farmer who cultivates land on a university campus.
It actually began in 2019, when I received funding from Puan Elizabeth Wong to purchase fruit trees for planting at my child's school.
After that, my interest grew even stronger when my family and neighbours were able to enjoy papayas from two papaya trees in front of my house—during the pandemic.
